A FIFE town is “open for business”.
That was the message coming from a community open day in Markinch on Saturday that saw local enterprise and community groups team up to showcase their work.
Hundreds of people descended on the town hall in Betson Street for the event, hosted by the recently-formed Markinch Community Trust.
As well as highlighting what Markinch has to offer to local residents, the Trust’s chair, local councillor John Beare, hopes that the event will help distinguish the community as a potential home for businesses outwith the immediate area.
“I think that Markinch is often overlooked but we have great transport links with the A92 and the rest of Fife,” he said
“We also have a railway station and there is already a wide range of businesses here.
“There are 110 businesses in Markinch and we had around 40 here today, which is tremendous.
“We’re hoping that we can establish a directory of all of them and show off what we have here.”
Among some of the entertainment provided on Saturday was a performance by the local community choir , as well as a zumba class.
Local charity groups were also present to highlight the work that they do in the town.
Markinch Community Trust had only been established last year to coordinate the installation of local Christmas lights.
However, with over 300 people attending that event, the Trust has continued its work and intends to broaden the profile of the community.
“It’s all snowballed from there,” added councillor Beare.
“But this has been a great event and has brought the whole of Markinch together.”
