An outbreak of illness caused by the cryptosporidium bug in Fife is under investigation.
Several adults and children have been treated for the infection, which has been linked with the Muddy Boots farm shop, cafe and activity centre.
None of the 10 cases of cryptosporidiosis confirmed since the middle of April has required hospital admission and all are in recovery. Most sufferers had visited the farm in Balmalcolm, near Cupar, during the Easter holidays.
Symptoms of crytosporidiosis, caused by the cryptosporidium parasite, include vomiting, stomach pains, fever and diarrhoea.
Assurance was offered by NHS Fife that there was no significant risk to the public and a reminder was issued to people to wash their hands carefully after visiting farms and exploring the countryside.
Treina Samson, of Muddy Boots, said the risk of infection was greatly outweighed by the benefits of visiting farms and the countryside, particularly for children.
She added: “Making sure people wash their hands will ensure the risk of infection is greatly reduced.”
