St Andrews University has again been named Scotland’s best by an online guide.
The Complete University Guide also reckons the Fife institution is sixth best in the UK. Dundee University comes seventh in Scotland and 47th in the UK, with Abertay University 13th in Scotland and 111th in the UK.
The rankings are based on criteria including entry standards, student satisfaction, good honours degrees achieved and graduate prospects, along with the staff-to-student ratio and spending on academic services and student facilities.
Listings are also given for 67 individual subjects, with St Andrews earning 22 places in top 10s and Dundee three.
Principal author of guide Dr Bernard Kingston said: “League tables viewed in isolation carry a health warning for good reason and the order towards the lower end of the ranking should be treated with some discretion. What is beyond dispute is that the top 10 includes some of the world’s finest higher education institutions.”
The top spots in the guide go to Cambridge, Oxford, the London School of Economics, Imperial College and Durham.
It also found that nationally 64.2% of the last batch of graduates had gone on to jobs requiring a degree a little higher than in the two previous years.
Last week the annual Leiden Rankings put St Andrews and Dundee among the top 100 in the world for the impact of their scientific research.
