Firefighters have praised the efforts of a “heroic” woman who rescued her neighbour from a house fire in Fife.
Neighbours were alerted to the blaze at 9.40pm on Tuesday by a smoke alarm in a ground-floor flat on West Forth Street in Cellardyke.
Crews from Anstruther and St Monans fire stations arrived to find a man in his 50s outside the property who had been rescued by a female neighbour.
The man was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee suffering from smoke inhalation.
Tom Fox, Glenrothes station manager, said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service would like to commend the actions of the neighbours in raising the alarm quickly, and in particular pay tribute to the female neighbour who entered the property and rescued the male occupant.
“Without these heroic actions, this particular incident may have resulted in a tragic outcome.
“Fortunately, a working smoke detector alerted the neighbour to the fire and firefighters were able to get to the incident quickly. This really highlights the value of having a working smoke alarm.”
