A St Andrews golf club faced a double tragedy at the weekend.
It is understood a New Golf Club member, who was understood to be from the London area, collapsed and died while playing in the club’s spring medal.
He had been feeling unwell and started to walk back in but collapsed around the 15th hole of the Old Course. He had only been a club member for around a year.
An ambulance service spokesman confirmed that the ambulance service had responded to a 999 call reporting that a male had collapsed on the golf course, near the first hole at the Eden Clubhouse, at around 1.50pm on Saturday.
The spokesman added: “Unfortunately the gentleman was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Meanwhile, the New Golf Club was dealt a second blow on Saturday when former club captain and Dundee businessman Steve Walls died after a long illness.
It is understood he had been suffering from a brain haemorrhage. He was captain in 2009.
