Tribute was paid to a well-known Fife councillor by members of the committee he led.
Dunfermline South councillor Mike Rumney passed away on July 25, after losing his fight with cancer. Members of the council’s Dunfermline area committee held a minute’s silence at their first meeting since his death.
Mr Rumney, who was a councillor for 18 years, had worked up to the day he died. Taking his place in the chair, Councillor Helen Law said he left big boots to fill.
“He brought an energy and enthusiasm to everything he did,” she said.
“However, it was as chairman of this committee that Mike really came into his own.
“He was proud to take forward initiatives to improve Dunfermline and its environment and he was particularly proud of his work on the Garden for Heroes and being able to pull together funding for it.”
She added: “He dealt with the news of his terminal illness with courage, dignity and humour his bravery really astounded folk.
“Mike leaves behind a legacy that his family can be proud of and we in the Labour party are certainly proud of him.”
Work is due to begin on the Garden for Heroes which will honour west Fife servicemen and women who risk or have lost their lives in conflicts around the world in September.
Meanwhile, Fife Council has confirmed the date of the by-election to fill Mr Rumney’s vacant seat.
A date of Thursday October 24 has been fixed for the ballot with all major political parties set to contest the seat.
While Labour are likely to start the contest as favourites, a strong challenge can be expected from both the SNP and Liberal Democrats, who are both already represented in the ward.
No details of candidates have been announced as yet, although further details are expected to emerge shortly as parties register their interest for the seat.
