Motorists caught up in Kirkcaldy roadworks are being reassured that the wait will be worth it.
Contractors are continuing work at the Fourways junction in the west of the town as part of preparations for the new Morrisons supermarket, which is set to open later this year.
The works have been ongoing since the start of July, although traffic levels have increased dramatically at rush hour periods since local schools returned last week.
Although some drivers have become frustrated by the delays, local councillor George Kay says that he hopes the frustration will be worthwhile when the new store opens.
Councillor Kay said: “We had a meeting of the Invertiel forum last week and we actually had one or two people who were very complimentary about the works and the way they were being handled.
“It is unfortunate that people have been delayed but I think they are doing good work.
“At the end of the day we are going to have a new supermarket for the area.”
The junction is the main artery between Kirkcaldy and the communities of Kinghorn and Burntisland. Used by hundreds of cars every day, queues into town are said to be stretching hundreds of metres long, as far as East Vows Walk.
Mark Barrett, lead officer for transportation development management in South Fife, said that the work was on schedule.
He went on: “Work to convert the existing Fourways Junction from a double mini-roundabout to a signal-controlled junction, and the formation of a new vehicular access on the Esplanade are being carried out by Optimisation Developments Limited. This is to accommodate the traffic generated by the new Morrisons store and includes diversions to an existing public utilities plant.
“The roadworks will take 16 weeks to complete and I am advised by the main contractor, Raynesway Construction, that it is on schedule, with Bridge Street expected to be open by Monday August 26 and all roadworks completed by Monday September 16.”
