A Fife shopkeeper has been exposed as a tax cheat after dodging paying tens of thousands of pounds.
Rafiq Maroof Raja avoided paying £27,889 in just over seven months while trading as a licensed grocer in Thornton.
The former owner of the Clock Shop was named and shamed by HM Revenue and Customs as it published a list of deliberate tax defaulters for the first time.
Mr Raja was one of nine tax dodgers across the UK investigated since April 2010 who had avoided paying more than £25,000. He has been ordered to pay the full amount, accrued between December 2010 and June 2011.
The Main Street shop was taken over by another trader in June 2011, and now operates under the Day-Today brand. Publication of the names of tax dodgers on its website is part of HMRC’s approach to combating tax evasion.
Others on the list include a hairdresser from Liverpool, a builder from Rochester, a Nottingham knitwear manufacturer and a coach operator in Bolton.
The Government department was given the power to name defaulters to deter taxpayers from trying to avoid obligations.
Those on the list have either made deliberate errors in tax returns or deliberately failed to comply with tax obligations.
New names will be added every three months.
