The future of RAF Leuchars, HMS Caledonia at Rosyth and RM Condor at Arbroath could become clear by as early as next week, according to the Ministry of Defence.
Rumours were circulating the House of Commons in London that the MoD’s long-awaited basing review could finally be announced within days.
An MoD spokesman told The Courier yesterday that an announcement was “imminent” and said this could be next week.
It is almost 20 months since former Defence Secretary Liam Fox announced the closure of Leuchars in its present form and that it would be used to house thousands of troops returning to the UK from deployment in Germany instead.
The MoD has confirmed that Typhoons from Leuchars are still due to be relocated to RAF Lossiemouth in Moray from the end of the year.
However, despite saying that it remained committed to a “sizeable army presence” at Leuchars, repeated delays in the MoD’s basing review announcement, plus further army cuts, has led to fears that Leuchars could yet be left with a smaller military presence than the multi-role brigade outlined in summer 2011.
