Photo of lost heroes from First World War discovered in Auchtermuchty
ByThe Courier Reporter
A remarkable photomontage has been unearthed in Auchtermuchty showing the men from the village who died in the First World War.
The photograph, set against a view of Auchtermuchty taken from Mournipea, was made in 1920 by photographer Frank Findlay.
Several copies of it survive in the village. As well as being remarkable, the image may be one of very few such photomontages made anywhere in Britain.
A group has been formed in Auchtermuchty to research the lives of the 29 men from Auchtermuchty and Dunshalt who lost their lives in the war.
Information is being gathered about the soldiers’ families, where they lived, their service records, where they died and where they are buried. It is also hoped to research the lives of the men who fought and survived.
The group is particularly interested in discovering personal stories about the men and their families.
The group hopes to create a website, publish a booklet and mount an exhibition to mark the centenary of the declaration of war on August 4 2014.
