Bomb disposal crews were called to Burntisland after an explosive was discovered at the beach.
Experts detonated the device after it had been spotted in the water over the weekend. Thought to have been a shell from the Second World War, the device was found at what was described as a “considerable” distance from the shore.
However, a decision to conduct a controlled detonation was taken to protect members of the public and prevent the possibility of the explosive from re-entering the waters of the Forth.
Chief Inspector Gordon Mitchell said: “Police received a call from a member of the public about an old bomb in the area of the harbour.
“The device was old and inactive. The bomb disposal unit attended the scene and made it safe.”
Fife is no stranger to washed up munitions on its coastline. Devices such as mortars are regularly found on beaches.
Members of the public are urged not to touch or approach anything that looks like an armament.
