Thousands flocked tothe Kirkcaldy Sands Races last year.

It is hoped a racing double bill next month will help boost the economy and confidence of Kirkcaldy High Street.

Just four days after hosting a major cycling event, the town’s beach will become the venue for motorcycle races. Last year the Pearl Izumi Tour Series and the Kirkcaldy Sands Races attracted around 5,000 spectators each.

It is anticipated greater awareness may bring even bigger crowds this time round. On May 14 Kirkcaldy will be the only Scottish host of the televised Pearl Izumi Tour Series.

Motorcycle racing will return to the town on May 18, replicating the popular Beveridge Park races of the last century.

Manager of business development group Kirkcaldy4All, Bill Harvey, said: “Both events really are quite a spectacle.”

The races, he said, were part of a series of attractions the group hopes will help boost trade during a difficult time for businesses.

Already a Christmas celebration and another couple of events are being planned.

Mr Harvey said: “We are trying to bring more and diverse events to the town centre to try to lift the perception that things are happening here.”

Kirkcaldy4All is working with Kirkcaldy Motor Club on the sands racing, which was piloted last year.

Mr Harvey said: “This year we are going to have two tracks, one at the eastern end of the promenade as well so people can go and visit the High Street and use what is there.

“Last year there was only a track at the western end and certainly the bars and cafes there really benefited.”

Next month’s races will include motocross, speedway and grass track bikes and there will be minimotos for youngsters, an obstacle course and classic bike displays.
