St Andrews residents drop the pound in favour of Saints
ByThe Courier Reporter
St Andrews folk have returned to good, old-fashioned bartering with the launch of their own currency.
The Saint Exchange sees people issued with cheque books to exchange goods or service, paying with saints instead of pounds.
At its official launch on Saturday, Transition University of St Andrews, which aims to make the community greener, welcomed more members to the community credit scheme.
Spokesman Paul White said: “It’s like bartering of old, someone might offer some potatoes in return for homemade bread.
“It also extends to services, if anyone is keen on a spot of gardening they can offer to do that. The more people join, the more things are offered, the bigger an effect this will have.”
There are also plans get local businesses involved and extend the scheme into the East Neuk.
