Dreich weather failed to the dampen the spirits of dedicated thrillseekers determined to be first on the rides at this year’s Links Market.
People flocked to Kirkcaldy Esplanade as heavy downpours in the morning abated in time for the opening of the popular funfair.
Over the next five days tens of thousands are expected to follow suit, soaking up the excitement and atmosphere of the market.
The Showmen’s Guild which puts on the mile-long showground believed to be Europe’s longest funfair expects two new rides, Atmosphere and Voodoo Dancer, to be hits with the crowd.
Market regulars will be delighted to hear that many of the old favourites are back, including white-knuckle rides, stalls and amusements.
Fife Provost Jim Leishman was among those to enjoy all the fun of the fair.
He said: “I’ve had a great afternoon opening the Links Market. As Europe’s longest and most modern street fair, it’s a real highlight on Fife’s event calendar and, as ever, it’s an impressive sight stretched along the Esplanade.
“I wish the event every success and am sure it will be enjoyed by people of all ages.”
As many as 200,000 people are expected to pay a visit to the market, which can trace its history back more than 700 years.
Keeping order again this year will be security firm G4S, which was drafted in for the first time last year to ensure the safety of fair-goers.
Police Scotland Fife Division said it will maintain a standard level of policing in the area, stepping in if and when required.
Throughout the duration of the fair, a number of traffic restrictions will be put in place in and around the waterfront area.
Traffic is being diverted away from the western stretch of the Esplanade, which is occupied by the rides and amusements.
Although the market will close on Monday, the road will remain closed, with diversions via Nicol Street and Abbotshall Road, until next Wednesday to allow shows to be dismantled and removed.
