RAF Leuchars has announced further details of the flying programme for what could be the final ever air show before its transition to an army base.
The Typhoon Display Team, Tucano, Sea King and the Falcons Parachute Display Team are included as part of this year’s RAF Leuchars “Battle of Britain At Home Day” Air Show, being held on Saturday September 7.
The Typhoon Display Team from 29 (Reserve) Squadron, RAF Coningsby will show how the multi-role fighter aircraft employs manoeuvrability and also highlights the impressive power of the Typhoon FGR4.
As the RAF’s Typhoon force continues to grow in size and capability, RAF Leuchars is at the centre of that development, being home to 1 (Fighter) and 6 squadrons, who maintain the Quick Reaction Alert mission for the northern UK, as well as supporting contingent operations.
The Tucano T1 from RAF Linton-on-Ouse, used as a workhorse for training fast-jet pilots, will feature a desert camouflage design for the 2013 season.
This mirrors the Second World War Spitfire aircraft which was operated by 72 Squadron.
D Flight, 202 Squadron, from RAF Lossiemouth, will be highlighting the capabilities, both in the sky and on the ground, of their search and rescue Sea King helicopter.
Another popular attraction will be the RAF Falcons parachute display team from RAF Brize Norton, who will drop from the skies of Fife.
All these participants will showcase the varied roles the RAF fulfils, alongside favourites the Red Arrows and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, comprising of Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster.
Air show executive, Wing Commander Neville Clayton, said: “It is a privilege for us to open the doors of the base and host this Battle of Britain Air Show on September 7.
“We are planning another exciting, fun-filled family event and we intend to highlight the motto of the station, ‘Attack and Protect’, which allows us to showcase a selection of the RAF’s capabilities, including the Typhoon, Tucano and Sea King.
“Since the Cold War, the RAF in Scotland has played a critical role in ensuring the integrity of UK airspace, a legacy that endures today with Typhoon. So it is very pleasing that the Typhoon Display Team will be gracing the skies.”
