A Kirkcaldy community leader has hit out at vandals who have damaged a playpark.
John Mainland, the chairman of Kirkcaldy North Community Council, has called on residents in the Chapel area of the town to report acts of vandalism to the police, following the damage done to a popular residential play area last weekend.
The park, located between Meikle Loan, Stock Street and Heron Place, has had a large chunk of its rubber surface torn up in what appears to have been a deliberate and persistent act.
It is thought that repairing the surface will cost hundreds of pounds and Mr Mainland is urging residents to play their part in preventing the problem from taking root in the community.
“I must say that it is pleasingly rare to hear reports of vandalism in that area,” he said. “But the message that we need to get out there is that these are facilities for everybody.
“They cannot be used if they are damaged and if anybody sees any damage being caused then they must report it to the police.”
The damage is said to have been noted by residents last Friday and the police have been informed of the situation.
Police officers have inspected the scene and launched an investigation into the matter, amid reports of groups of youths congregating at the park.
Stating the importance of safe, playparks to the community, Mr Mainland added: “When I went to look at the damage, there were certainly a few children using the park.
“The Dunnikier area does not have any local play areas and we need high-quality parks that can benefit everybody.”
Community sergeant Scott Murray is leading inquiries into the vandalism.
He told The Courier: “We have conducted door-to-door inquiries and are appealing for anybody with information to come forward.”
