A teenager and a mother of three have been named as the victims of a fatal road accident in Kirkcaldy.
Abby Hucknall (18) and Jane MacDonald (37) were found by Jane’s son Joe (19) moments after the collision on the B981 Dunnikier Way shortly after 6.30pm on Tuesday.
The trio lived together in a flat in Earn Road, yards from the scene of the tragedy.
Yesterday, Jane’s niece Sherelene MacDonald (29) described how she rushed Jane’s youngest children to hospital to be with their mother, but they were too late.
She said: ”I got a call from Joe about 6:30pm. He was at the scene. He said: ‘They’re dead’. He started screaming. He was hysterical.
”I got really upset and I started asked questions but all I could hear was him screaming.
”Then a policeman came on the phone and told me they had been hit by a car and they were going to be taken to hospital. He asked if I would meet him there.
”I grabbed the children and went to the hospital. When we arrived the police said they were dead. I just went into shock.”
”We wanted to see them but they wouldn’t let us. They said they were both in a very bad way.”
Jane’s cousin, Samantha Ward (24), added: ”The whole family has taken it really badly. We can’t actually believe it has happened.
”The three kids are just staying in their room. They’ve shut themselves away.”
Off-duty nurse Sam Clark (35), who was driving ahead of the Land Rover, told how she saw the impact occur and rushed to help.
The staff nurse, who had just picked up her children from their child minder, said: ”I was in the car in front. I saw the impact in my rear view mirror and stopped the car.
”I told my two kids to stay in the car and I went to phone an ambulance.
”The Land Rover stopped very quickly, as did I. We just got out and tried to help.
”I went to the older woman, just a petite woman, and checked for a pulse. She had a very weak pulse at that point.
”I knew what to do from the life training we get, but it was distressing.
”There was a paramedic with the younger girl and I went to see if he needed help, and then I went back.
”I started CPR on the older lady.
”You’ve always got to hope, and just keep trying.”
Abby’s family yesterday released a statement through Fife Constabulary, paying tribute to the teenager.
It said: ”She was a very bubbly, caring and beautiful girl, a much-loved daughter, sister and granddaughter who will be sorely missed by all who knew her.”
The collision between the duo and the black Land Rover Discovery occurred on the eastbound carriageway, a short distance from the local Asda supermarket where they are believed to have been shopping beforehand.
The road remained closed overnight and forensics teams arrived at first light yesterday to conduct a painstaking search of the scene.
The route was re-opened shortly after 9am.
A former local resident, who asked not to be named, came across the scene on Tuesday night.
He said that he recognised Jane as she was being put into an ambulance.
He said: ”I saw them running across that road a lot when I lived there and when I saw the mother in the ambulance I knew that Abby would have been involved as well.
”It’s tragic, especially coming up to Christmas.”
Fife Constabulary have continued their appeal for information about the incident and have asked anybody who can help with their inquiries to make contact on 0845 600 5702, or to phone Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
