THE FAMILY of a Glenrothes man killed in a weekend road crash have described their heartache at losing their “hero”.
Stuart Young was killed on the A1 in Lincolnshire on Saturday evening when another car seemingly crashed into the back of his Ford Focus.
It is believed the 24-year-old, an army paratrooper who had seen action in Afghanistan, had been driving back to his barracks at the time of the incident.
Just minutes before the impact, a message posted on Mr Young’s Twitter account had stated that he had been experiencing mechanical problems with his vehicle.
A tribute from Mr Young’s family spoke of their heartache at their loss.
“Stuart’s death has left a hole in our hearts,” they said. “He was our hero, he was an amazing young man loved by many. Stuart’s first love was being a soldier, he loved his family and friends and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.”
Mr Young’s commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel David Marshall, commanding officer of 13 Air Assault Support Regiment, said the close-knit regiment was shocked and saddened by the tragedy.
Despite being transported to Peterborough City Hospital, Mr Young died of his injuries.
The 30-year-old driver of a Volkswagen Passat was also taken to hospital with minor injuries but was later discharged after treatment.
The man was arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Police are continuing their investigation.
