The source of the famous “Methil Ming” has finally been confirmed.
Independent research by scientists at the James Hutton Institute in Invergowrie has traced the source of the notorious pong to the Levenmouth sewage treatment works after decades of complaints from local residents.
The data was presented at the latest Levenmouth Stakeholders meeting, with plant owners Scottish Water and partners SEPA and Fife Council now understood to be working to tackle the problem.
Local MSP David Torrance has welcomed the news, saying: “I am delighted that we are at last beginning to see real progress in identifying the causes of the odour smells.
“The James Hutton Institute’s very impressive presentation showed a correlation of all the data collected, which finally proves that the smells are coming from the existing plant.
“This is a long-term investigation and it will take time to rectify the current problems.
“However, I am more than confident that we are delivering some positive outcomes with the cooperation of all partners involved and that a solution will eventually be found.”
Last summer saw local residents protest against a lack of action to tackle the smell said to be similar to rotten eggs taking to the streets in face masks.
