Kirkcaldy Crematorium at centre of baby ashes allegation

Lawyers representing families affected by the baby ashes scandal say they are investigating a case in Fife.

Glasgow legal firm Thompsons Solicitors say they have been contacted by a Fife family who believe the ashes of their dead child may have been disposed of without their knowledge.

The claims are understood to involve Kirkcaldy Crematorium, which is operated by Fife Council.

It follows allegations made against Mortonhall Crematorium in Edinburgh, where it is claimed parents were incorrectly told there were no ashes to dispose of following the cremation of their lost babies.

Patrick McGuire from the legal firm said: “We’ve had more than 100 families contacting us.

“New cases involve Linn Crematorium in Glasgow, Kirkcaldy Crematorium and Hazlehead in Aberdeen, as well as Mortonhall.”

Liz Murphy, bereavement services manager at Fife Council, said crematoriums in the region worked to strict guidelines.

She said: “I’d like to give a reassurance both our crematoria in Fife operate to a high standard and experienced staff work to quality standards based on legislation and national guidance.

“Any remains from any cremation will always be offered to a family.”
