Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has led the tributes to Anna Rowley, the mother of Fife Council leader Alex, who has died at the age of 82.
Mrs Rowley was born in Kelty in 1930 and died after a period of care in Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline.
Local MP Gordon Brown described her as a “caring person who influenced so many people over the years with her absolute belief in fairness and justice”.
He said: “Anna showed such friendliness, generosity of spirit, and kindness to all, she was universally admired and respected.
“All who knew her are grateful for her goodness to them. I personally was a beneficiary of her kindness of spirit and willingness to be of help and her friendship at all times.
“She braved a long illness with quiet dignity and good grace and she will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Our thoughts are with the Rowley family.”
Cupar councillor and family friend Bryan Poole said: “Anna was a really unique person who had an amazing love for people and had a genuine interest in everyone she met.”
Former Dunfermline councillor Willie Sullivan said: “Anna Rowley had a deep sense of fairness that was a major influence on generations of Labour and community activists who came into contact with her.”
Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Jayne Baxter said: “Although Anna never stood for election she was a major influence in Fife politics through her hard work, wisdom and values.
“Her faith was a strong driving force in her life but she never preached to anyone, she simply led by example.”
Mrs Rowley was married to Willie, himself a long- standing local councillor. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She worked in the Jeltek Factory for many years and then as a school bus escort until her retirement and was active in many organisations in Kelty, chairing the local Labour party for many decades.
Mrs Rowley’s funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10am in St Joseph’s RC Church in Kelty and thereafter to Beath Cemetery.
