RAF Leuchars will stage its annual air show on Saturday September 7 just months before Typhoon fighter jets and hundreds of RAF Leuchars personnel are due to start relocating to Moray.
However a spokesman said “no decision had yet been taken” on whether this would be the final airshow at Leuchars.
RAF Leuchars said in a brief statement: “We are pleased to announce that the RAF Leuchars Airshow 2013 will take place on Saturday September 7.
“More information will be available in due course including details of how you can book your tickets for another tremendous family day out at RAF Leuchars.”
The airshow, which is the only remaining Battle of Britain Air Show and the second-largest non-sporting outdoor event in Scotland, after T in the Park, annually attracts more than 40,000 visitors to the Fife airbase.
According to the RAF, the airshow provides an opportunity for RAF Leuchars to celebrate the RAF at its best, showcasing its wide range of roles and highlighting its rich heritage.
It has also been an important opportunity for the station to welcome its neighbours throughout Scotland and beyond on to the base and to thank them for their support throughout the year.
The airshow is seen as a vehicle through which RAF Leuchars increases the public’s understanding of the RAF plus its roles, capabilities and its people.
The airshow is not funded by the taxpayer. Instead, additional revenue raised is donated to the RAF Benevolent Fund, Royal Air Force Association and local charities.
Confirmation that the 2013 airshow is going ahead comes just weeks after defence chiefs confirmed that up to 30 Typhoon fighter jets and 400 RAF personnel will start moving to Moray before Christmas. This will continue into 2014.
The UK Government has said the “phased relocation” of two squadrons from RAF Leuchars to RAF Lossiemouth would begin by the end of 2013.
The transfer of the aircraft worth billions of pounds and hundreds of staff will secure the future of the last remaining airbase in Moray and is described as “crucial” for the economy.
The Ministry of Defence says it remains committed to a “sizeable army presence” at Leuchars but has yet to confirm a timetable or detail of deployment through its ongoing basing review although unconfirmed reports have suggested the army could be on site from January 2015.
