Dunfermline eyes Homecoming boost

Robert the Bruce is buried in Dunfermline Abbey and the town will mark the 700th anniversary of his victory at Bannockburn during the celebrations.

The long-term future of Dunfermline could be boosted by its leading role in the build-up to Homecoming Scotland 2014.

That is the view of the Dunfermline 2014 group, who have held their first meeting in the run-up to next year’s events, which highlight the 700th anniversary of King Robert the Bruce’s triumph in the Battle of Bannockburn.

As the famous king is buried in the ancient capital, Dunfermline is set to be at the centre of the celebrations.

Thomas Moffat, of Visit Dunfermline, said: “The public and private sectors owe it to the people of Dunfermline to work together and deliver events and promotions which will ignite civic pride and, in turn, give the person on the street something to be proud of.

“I am, therefore, delighted that Visit Dunfermline, Dunfermline Delivers and Fife Council will be working alongside dynamic, forward-thinking and nationally-acclaimed businesses such as the Alhambra Theatre to kick-start plans for Dunfermline 2014.”

Bill Fletcher of the Alhambra said: “The Alhambra Theatre has always attempted to lead from the front and deliver high-quality arts and entertainment aimed at as large a cross section of the community as possible.

“To make a significant difference in the image and perception of Dunfermline it is vital that the public and private sectors work together and there is no time like the present to initiate this productive, forward thinking relationship.”

Dunfermline Athletic chairman John Yorkston added: “It is wonderful to see Dunfermline seizing this opportunity and with a concentrated effort everyone can play a part, large or small, in helping Dunfermline 2014 shine a light on our wonderful home town.”

Maggie Mitchell, chief executive of Dunfermline Delivers, said: “For businesses in Dunfermline, Homecoming Scotland 2014 events and the people that attend those events offer a fantastic opportunity to showcase their businesses and quality products they offer, whether retail, cafe or bar, allowing them to increase demand and revenue.”

Joe McGuinness, of Fife Council, added: “Fife Council are determined to work alongside Dunfermline 2014 with an eye on the long-term future, developing new ideas and projects which will elevate the area way into 2020 and beyond.”
