Two Fife churches have read all 1189 chapters of the King James Bible in a week setting a Scottish record.
Volunteers in Lower Largo and Upper Largo took turns in the readathon, with even the Moderator of the Church of Scotland, the Right Rev John Christie, and Lord Lieutenant of Fife Margaret Dean joining in.
The authorised version of the Bible has over 31,000 verses and while it has been read over a long weekend in England, such a feat had never been achieved north of the border.
The read, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, began in Largo and Newburn Kirk on April 13 and was completed in Largo St David’s Kirk at 4.15pm a week later, in just under 80 hours.
Congregations in both villages were joined by people of other Christian denominations from all over Scotland.
Parish minister the Rev John Murdoch said it was an honour to have the moderator, his wife Annette and Mrs Dean help them.
He said, “It’s been an extraordinary journey since we began last week.
“We felt we were starting on something that was so different.
“Somehow, when we have read these words out loud together, publicly, it has made such a difference and we are just so thrilled that we’ve had this opportunity and privilege of reading holy scripture in this way.”
At the conclusion, Mr Murdoch presented Mr Christie and Mrs Dean with palm crosses and commemorative gifts.
