Youth impaled on bike in freak accident in Anstruther

A young boy was rushed to hospital over the weekend after becoming impaled on his bike in Anstruther.
The 11-year-old, who is believed to live locally, was out playing on his bike, enjoying the spring sunshine, when the freak accident happened in the fishing village’s Kirk Wynd at around 2pm on Saturday.
It is understood the boy fell off his bike near the town hall, with the handlebarsspecifically the brake lever part of the bikesomehow ending up stuck in his leg.
An ambulance was immediately called and, after arriving at the scene to discover what had happened, paramedics then summoned firefighters from St Monans to assist in dismantling the bike using cutting gear.
That made it easier for the ambulance crew to put the youngster, who was said to be conscious throughout, into their vehicle and transport him to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.
Doctors at Ninewells were unable to confirm his condition yesterday but it is believed that his injuries were not life-threatening.
