One of the world’s leading experts in the study of global terrorism and political violence is being laid to rest in Fife today.
Professor Emeritus Paul Wilkinson, who came to St Andrews University in 1989 to take up the first chair in international relations, passed away at the age of 74 last week.
His funeral is being held at Crail Parish Church, before a burial at Crail Cemetery.
Co-founder of the Fife seat of learning’s globally-renowned centre for the study of terrorism, Mr Wilkinson not only became a familiar face in St Andrews but in living rooms around the globe as a commentator on the scourge of political violence.
A parliamentary motion praising Professor Wilkinson and offering the condolences of ministers following his death has been lodged at Holyrood.
Paying tribute to the professor’s “huge contribution,” the motion has already received cross-party support.
Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser, who lodged the motion, described Mr Wilkinson as “an inspiration.”
The motion states that the Scottish Parliament notes Mr Wilkinson’s death “with sadness.”
It highlights the fact that the professor was an “eminent academic” and recognises his “huge contribution to the study of terrorism.”
First Minister Alex Salmond, himself a St Andrews graduate, has also paid tribute.Click here for a full obituary.
