A St Andrews woman died following an early-morning crash in Fife on Wednesday.
The woman named today as56-year-old mother-of-two Grace Thom was driving along the A91 from Guardbridge towards St Andrews in the early hours when her car left the road.
The silver Ford Focus careered into trees before flipping on to its roof.
Emergency crews were quickly on the scene and paramedics treated Mrs Thom at the roadside for serious head injuries before she was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.
Sadly, there was nothing medical teams could do and she died a short time later.
Police said Mrs Thom was the sole occupant of the car at the time of the accident and no other vehicles were involved.
The incident occurred at around 4.15am at a series of bends on the arterial stretch of road approximately two miles from St Andrews. Mrs Thom was pronounced dead at around 7.30am.
Following the accident, the A91 was closed, with traffic diverted via Strathkinness. Accident investigators carried out a meticulous examination of the scene.
Motorists reported major tailbacks in the area as a result, with disruption continuing well into rush hour and beyond.
Spectators hoping to watch practice sessions ahead of today’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship were among those caught up in the tailbacks.
A police spokesman appealed for witnesses to the accident to call Fife police on 0845 6005702.
