Friends of a Fife mother who died when her car careered off the road and flipped on to its roof have spoken of their shock.

Grace Thom died following the early-morning crash two miles from St Andrews on Wednesday.

Neighbours described their devastation following the death of the 56-year-old mother of two.

Mrs Thom lived alone with her dog in James Robb Avenue, St Andrews.

”It is very sad … she was quiet but a very nice person,” one neighbour said. ”She was disabled and couldn’t sleep through the night so she would often go away and do her shopping in the middle of the night.

”It is just so shocking.”

Emergency crews rushed to the scene of the accident on the A91 at around 4.20am on Wednesday after the alarm was raised by a fellow motorist.

Mrs Thom was rushed to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, with head injuries. She died around three hours later.

Another neighbour said: ”She was a very kind person who kept herself to herself. She was a good neighbour to have. It was an awful shock when I heard the news.

”She had a wee dog she loved and I don’t know what will happen to it now, but her two sons will sort everything.”

Mrs Thom’s family were too upset to talk about the tragedy and have asked for time to grieve privately.

Police are still appealing for witnesses to the crash to call 0845 6005702.
