A 55-year-old man who was airlifted to hospital after suffering critical injuries in an accident near Kirkcaldy has died, police have confirmed.
The man, who will not be named until relatives have been informed, was the driver of a blue Ford Focus which was in collision with with a Ford Transit van, on the B9157 known locally as the Orrock Quarry Road near Cuddyknowes Cottages.
The accident occurred at around 7am on Friday.
The car driver was seriously injured. He had to be cut free from the wreckage by firefighters and was flown to Edinburgh Royal by air ambulance.
It is understood he was on a life support machine but it was turned off in the afternoon.
Traffic on the busy Fife commuter route, between Kirkcaldy and Dalgety Bay, was brought to a standstill following the accident.
The road was closed to all traffic for several hours while police carried out investigations.
Chief Inspector Brenda Sinclair said: ”Investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the accident and I would appeal to anyone in the area at the time who may have witnessed the accident or seen a blue Ford Focus or a white Transit van around 7am this morning to contact us on 0845 600 5702.”
The B9157 is a notorious accident hotspot, having witnessed many road crashes over the last 10 years, some of which have been fatal.
