Two children were assaulted and another two treated for alcohol consumption during a huge end-of-term beach party in St Andrews.
The trouble occurred when hundreds of pupils from around north-east Fife converged on the West Sands last Friday night.
Nearly 30 litres of alcohol were seized and a further five children were referred for alcohol advice.
A report has gone to the Children’s Reporter concerning the assaults.
Police brought in extra numbers after learning that there may be trouble between rival schools and large amounts of alcohol were to be involved.
Community Inspector Garry Muir said, “Fortunately, our intelligence gathering process was correct on this occasion, which enabled us to intercept nearly 400 children before their arrival at the West Sands.
“Unfortunately, nearly 30 litres of alcohol went on to be seized.
“Two children were treated by ambulance crews for excess alcohol consumption and then returned to their parents.”
Officers on duty said the majority of children behaved well, but Inspector Muir said, “There was an element set on causing trouble.”
He said he was particularly concerned about the amount of alcohol the youngsters had managed to obtain and issued an appeal for information about where it had come from.
