A man remains in a critical condition after his car was involved in a head-on collision with a double-decker bus on Tuesday.
The 65-year-old, who is to understood to be from the Cupar area, was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee following the crash. The bus driver was treated for a broken ankle.
The vehicles collided on the A91 around a mile west of Cupar at 1.45pm on Tuesday.
Inquiries into the incident are continuing and the police have issued an appeal for witnesses.
Inspector Brenda Sinclair, deputy head of road policing in Fife, said, “The 65-year-old man had been driving a blue Vauxhall Astra toward Cupar when it collided with a double-decked service bus travelling in the opposite direction.
“As a consequence of the collision, he suffered life-threatening injuries. He was taken by ambulance, under police escort, to Ninewells where his condition is still given as serious.
“I would appeal to anybody who may have witnessed the collision, or saw the Astra being driven prior to the accident, to come forward by calling Fife Police on 0845 6005702.”
The driver had to be cut free from the wreckage by firefighters. A trauma team from Ninewells also attended, along with three ambulance crews.
Bus passengers escaped without serious injury and were described as “walking wounded.”
The road was closed for several hours following the crash, to allow debris to be cleared.
During the prolonged closure some tailbacks were reported as police officers diverted traffic to alternative routes.
The bus involved in the collision was a Stagecoach number 23, travelling from Stirling to St Andrews.
