A two-year-old girl has fallen to her death from a second floor flat in Kirkcaldy.
The tragic tot was rushed to Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline, having sustained serious injuries in the fall on Friday.
She was later transferred to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, in Edinburgh, but efforts to save her life failed.
The horrific accident occurred at around 2.45pm just yards from a school where children were in class.
Paramedics rushed to the scene and police cordoned off the area around the flat where the little girl lived in Fair Isle Road.
It remained sealed off as children were leaving Fair Isle Primary School directly opposite the two-storey block of flats.
The dead child’s name was not released.
Neighbours who spoke to The Courier did not know the family but it is understood the girl’s mother was a teenager.
One neighbour said, “The street was blocked off for ages.
“An ambulance came and there were two police cars and a police van which were here for hours.
“All the school bairns were coming out and they were having to divert the traffic away.”
There were no obvious signs on the street, in the Templehall area of Kirkcaldy, of an accident having occurred.
However, a buggy stood abandoned in the stairwell of the block of flats where the girl lived.
Fife Constabulary confirmed it was investigating the circumstances of the incident.
A statement released by the police said, “About 2.45pm today emergency services were called to an address in Fair Isle Road, Kirkcaldy, where it was reported a child had fallen from a second-storey level.
“The child was initially taken to the Queen Margaret Hospital, in Dunfermline, before being taken to the Sick Kids Hospital, in Edinburgh, where she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries.”
