Businessman hopes to transform former Hook’s Hotel in Kirriemuir

A derelict Angus hotel is to be brought “into the 21st Century” if new plans are approved.

John Cape wants to convert Hook’s Hotel in Kirriemuir, describing the proposal as a “major development” for the town.

He has applied to Angus Council for permission to build a shop, four flats, two cottages and a three-bedroom house on the site of the hotel and its grounds.

Mr Cape said: “The hotel and its outbuildings have stood empty in Kirriemuir town centre for several years now.

“It is completely derelict and has become an eyesore in a prominent location.

“I have bought the hotel and associated buildings and plan to turn it into something attractive and useful.

“I want to bring the building right up into the 21st Century.”

His proposal includes turning the ground floor of the hotel into a retail unit, which Mr Cape hopes he can rent out.

He added: “My plans include converting the upper floor into flats, an old storage building behind the hotel into cottages and create a three-bedroom house on land behind the hotel.

“The concept for the house is very 21st Century, creating a huge open-plan living space with lots of glass on the upper floor.”

Mr Cape said he hoped his proposal would win the council’s support and bring rental accommodation in.

He added: “I have been told by many young people that they have to move to Dundee and beyond to get decent rental accommodation.”

The developer said he hopes the quality of accommodation he is planning would help keep people in the town.

“I see this as a major development for Kirriemuir and important regeneration of a building that is currently in a poor condition,” he added.

Kirriemuir Community Council has previously called for someone to take on the redevelopment of the building.
