The lightning-hit spire of St Stephen’s and West Church in Broughty Ferry could be rebuilt in its original style rather than to modern industry standards.
With the cost of the support scaffolding mounting daily, the congregation is hoping a decision on its future can be reached soon so restoration work can begin.
Lightning struck the spire in May, since when it has been encased in scaffolding with church services held in the nearby hall.
The kirk’s assistant fabric convener Ronald Raffan said discussions are continuing on the best way to proceed.
“It is a little bit frustrating that we appear to be making no progress whatsoever but I will chat with the contractors to tidy the place up a bit as it appears there may not be a great deal happening for some time,” he said.
“Every day the scaffolding is costing an arm and a leg. But I think in fairness the scaffolding costs will be small in comparison with the overall cost.”
The choice is between replacing the spire using modern industry standards, but with the same outward appearance, and rebuilding it in identical fashion to the 19th century structure. Given its A-listed status, it seems likely the second option will be chosen.
A city council spokesman said applying for planning permission could be avoided if the church opted to restore the spire exactly as it was before it was damaged.
“The building is A-listed and our conservation officer and building control staff have been asked for their informal advice, which they have been happy to give,” he said.
