Campaigner Stella Carrington has been named Dundee citizen of the year.
The 76-year-old has been the driving force behind several projects in the city, including the Jute Women statue in Lochee she was even selected as the sculpture’s adult model.
For the last 10 years Stella has been chairwoman of the Dundee West Communities Association and is known for her work in the community.
She said: “It is a real privilege to have been chosen, particularly given how many people there are doing great work in the city.
“This award isn’t just for me it is for everyone who volunteers and works hard to make the city better as a whole.”
The Charleston resident said she felt the Jute Women statue in Lochee is one of her greatest achievements.
“That took 10 years to come about,” she said.
“It was really hard work, but it was worth it, but there are so many other things as well.”
Lord Provost Bob Duncan paid tribute to Stella’s work.
He said: “Stella Carrington stood out among this year’s applications.
“She has spent so many years giving back to her local community without asking for anything in return. We first met in the meeting areas of the tenements in Charleston, working to make the area better. No matter how cold it was, how wet it was, you could always rely on Stella to be there.
“She is an inspiring individual and one who encourages, supports and motivates people to transform where they live. Stella is an exceptional candidate and a worthy winner.”
Each year, the city council seeks out a citizen who has provided outstanding service to their community.
Judges look for someone who provides selfless service to a voluntary body or the community and who brings distinction and quality to everyday life in Dundee.
Dundee Federation of Tenants’ Associations praised the winner.
A spokesman said: “Congratulations to Stella Carrington, chair of Charleston Registered Tenant Organisation, on becoming Dundee Citizen of the Year.”
It is not the first time that she has been recognised for her efforts.
In 2011, she was among the local heroes invited to take part in a procession to the Scottish Parliament.
Stella sits on no fewer than eight committees and has helped raise thousands of pounds for the community.
She also steered the project to develop the Village Green in Charleston.
