Professor Duthie was head of the linguistics department at the University of Accra, the state capital. He went there about 50 years ago under a British Government scheme for academics to help set up higher education institutions abroad. He was inspired by the challenge of developing the university and pursuing a career and in the west African state, and made the country his home. He married a Ghanaian, Matilda, and they have a son David. Professor Duthie, whose parents were Stewart and Evelyn, was raised in the Downfield area of Dundee. The family’s home was in Sunnybrae Terrace. He was educated at the Dundee High School before going to university. Professor Duthie regularly returned to Dundee and kept on the house in Downfield after his parents died. He died suddenly in hospital after suffering astomach ailment. His funeral and burial were held in Accra on Friday.
