The 2014 Ryder Cup legacy will include a dramatic upgrade of the local railway station.
The outdated Gleneagles rail link close to the hotel and golf courses is set for a multi-million-pound facelift.
Planning applications have been submitted for a new link road and the removal of the current pedestrian footbridge.
A document with the plans submitted by designers Halcrow states: ”Presently, the rail station can only be accessed via the A9 dual carriageway and there are serious road safety concerns for cars entering and exiting the station access road due to the high speeds and high volumes of traffic.
”The existing access is considered to be substandard as there are no deceleration or acceleration lanes for station users and northbound traffic must cross the southbound carriageway also.
”Following the recommendations of the TACTRAN Transport Delivery Plan, Perth and Kinross Council now propose to construct a new link road to Gleneagles Station via the Loaninghead roundabout.
”This link road will be a dedicated safe access to the station, accessed and exited via the roundabout, therefore significantly increasing road safety.
”In addition, the passenger/commuter facilities in the station forecourt are to be upgraded to allow for more users to use the station for park and ride, car and bus drop-off and cycle-parking.
”By increasing the commuter capacity of Gleneagles Station, the number of trains servicing the station can then be increased.”
The new link road will allow the existing A9 accesses to Gleneagles railway station and Millhill Farm to be stopped up.
Because the station is B-listed, a separate planning application has been submitted for the removal of the redundant pedestrian bridge, which dates from 1919.
Network Rail supports the proposal.
