Fundraising Perth couple mount assault on Kilimanjaro
ByRichard Burdge
A Perth couple have conquered Kilimanjaro, the globe’s highest free-standing mountain.
In the process, fitness fanatic Alan Stewart and his girlfriend Lesley Orrock have raised almost £4,000 for the British Heart Foundation.
They admitted: “This was the toughest challenge we have ever undertaken.
“Fitness-wise, we were ready for the assault on Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro but getting to the top of the 19,341ft-high peak was exhausting.
“The last two days of the ascent were particularly demanding and with altitude sickness kicking in big-style the closer we got to the summit, we had to draw on all our reserves of stamina and willpower.
“But as we toasted our accomplishment with beer and Champagne, we had a tremendous sense of achievement and of raising a sizeable sum for our chosen charity.”
Alan, 36, is a project manager with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and Lesley, 33, is a teacher at Methven Primary School.
