A sports hall at a £12 million Perthshire school has partially reopened after safety concerns forced its closure.
The facility at the Community School of Auchterarder was closed a fortnight ago on the orders of Perth and Kinross Council. An inspection at the site raised concerns over a potentially serious fault with the structure.
The closure forced pupils to take PE lessons outside, while sports clubs such as Auchterarder Gymnastics Club had to cease using the venue.
However, the council announced the gym section of the building could reopen after experts said it was safe to do so. It is unknown when the rest of the facility will be back in action.
A council spokeswoman said: “Engineers have confirmed they have no concerns over reopening the gymnasium side of the sports hall block for use. The gymnastics club has been informed and is making plans to resume gymnastics classes this week.
“Investigative works are continuing into the structure of the main sports hall. Until these are complete, we cannot provide a timescale of when the repairs will be carried out and the hall will reopen.”
It is understood that a new entrance to the gymnasium has been created but that users have no access to changing facilities or permanent toilets.
Councils across the country ordered reviews of their buildings following the death of 12-year-old Keane Wallis-Bennett at Liberton High School, Edinburgh, last year.
The schoolgirl was crushed to death when a false “modesty” wall in a changing room collapsed on top of her.
