A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of a man in a Perth flat blaze.
The grim discovery by firefighters of a body within the ground floor flat at 36 Lewis Place, North Muirton, on Sunday sparked a joint investigation by police and fire officers.
After forensic officers examined the scene and the body of the 50-year-old victim, police confirmed they were treating the death as “suspicious.”
Later in the day they revealed a man had been apprehended in connection with the incident.
Neighbours in the quiet corner of the housing scheme described the householder, who is understood to have lived alone, as a friendly man who “kept himself to himself.”
A post-mortem examination to establish exactly how the man died is expected to be carried out today and the investigation into the full set of circumstances surrounding the incident, including house-to-house inquiries and forensic examination at the scene, is continuing.
The police said the man’s next of kin had been informed of the incident.
His details will not be released until he has been formally identified, though they did say the man was understood to be local to the area.
A full report on the incident will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
Police appealed for anyone who was in the area between 9pm on Saturday and 12.20am yesterday who saw anyone acting suspiciously to contact them on 0300 1112222, speak to any police officer or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
