A new product from a Carse of Gowrie winery could lead to a revival of the area’s fruit-growing heritage.
Cairn o’ Mohr Winery at Errol has branched out into producing cider made from apples brought in by locals.
The first batch was so successful that owner Ron Gillies said most people were “not quick enough to get a taste.”
Spurred on by that initial reaction and to a non-alcoholic apple juice Mr Gillies has produced another batch of cider and is keen to see a renaissance in local orchards to supply the demand.
At one time the Carse boasted tens of thousands of fruit trees which have dwindled over the years.
Now Mr Gillies, assisted by other enthusiasts keen to turn back the clock, has begun to plant trees for future supplies.
One project is at the Megginch Estate, where apple and pear trees are being planted.
“We will be planting a lot of trees,” Mr Gillies said.
“We want to rekindle the orchard industry.”
The winery has built a strong reputation on using local produce such as brambles and elderflowers as the source of its award-winning wines.
Already a haven for connoisseurs of its individual products, Cairn o’ Mohr has now opened a cafe which is open Wednesday through to Sunday, 10am to 4.30pm.
