Customers and staff at a Perthshire playpark were left “a-llama-ed” after spotting one of its prize attractions unexpectedly giving birth.
Not only were staff at Active Kids Adventure Park near Stanley unaware their three-year-old female llama, Priscilla, was pregnant, they thought her male companion, Hector, was infertile.
Park owner Kerr Currie said, “One of the customers came running in, saying the llama was about to give birth. It was quite a surprise.
“We have no idea how this has come about it’s a bit of a miracle. We’ve had the llamas for two years and we thought the male had been castrated.”
Kerr cleared the area to prevent the mother getting distressed and called a vet, who admitted he was not really “up to speed” on cria (baby llamas).
Kerr said, “He told me to leave it for 15 minutes and let it get on with things itself. Luckily she gave birth with no problems and she and the baby are fine.
“The mother was up on her feet within minutes and the baby was trying to stand straight away on long, spindly legs it was lovely to see.
“We’ll make a shelter outside for it and hopefully the mother will be able to look after it. I’m sure it will be quite an attraction with summer coming up.”
