A man who died in an early-morning accident on the A9 in Perthshire on Monday has been named by police as Roy Greene (41), of Kilsyth, Glasgow.
The two-vehicle accident caused massive tailbacks for motorists heading for Perth as they were diverted away from the scene. It happened on the northbound carriageway at the Findo Gask junction, four miles from Auchterarder, at around 6.30am.
Mr Greene and his passenger were travelling in a white Renault Trafic van when it collided with a yellow Leyland Daf tipper truck.
Mr Greene was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 45-year-old from the Shawhead area, sustained minor cuts to his leg and chest. The driver of the tipper truck was not injured.
Firefighters from Perth attended at the scene and used cutting gear to free the victims from the wreckage.
The northbound carriageway was closed from Auchterarder to the Dunning turn-off during the incident. It remained closed for several hours to allow accident investigators to examine the scene.
Traffic was diverted from the A9 across country to the A85 Crieff to Perth road, causing significant delays for commuters. At one point tailbacks on the A9 were stretching back six miles, with traffic barely moving.
One motorist travelling into Perth from Dunblane found her journey took around two hours.
“It was chaos, the traffic was crawling along,” she said. “Just north of Blackford the traffic came to a standstill. It then took me about 25 minutes to go one mile.”
Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to get in touch with police on 0300 111 2222.
