Adventurer Mark Beaumont will be in the saddle at Scotland’s first national conference for mountain biking.

The cyclist, who has pedalled around the world and down the length of the Americas, will be a keynote speaker at the Perth event.

Mountain biking has grown massively in recent years and Scotland is now recognised as one of the best destinations in the world for the activity.

Perthshire-born Mark, who went to school in Dundee, will tell delegates in Perth Concert Hall on October 28 about his record-breaking travels and how cycling Scotland in his youth inspired him to embark on the challenges.

Also speaking will be Scotland’s public health and sport minister Shona Robison and Scots snowboarder Lesley McKenna.

Lesley, who has been to the Olympics three times, aims to encourage women and girls into the activity.

A strategic framework for promoting mountain biking in Scotland has been established and a team, Developing Mountain Biking In Scotland, set up to deliver it.

Project manager Graeme McLean said, “Through this conference we want to inform, inspire and energise councils, businesses, community groups, public bodies, charities and the mountain biking community to developing mountain biking in Scotland in a sustainable way.

“We want this popular activity to reach its full potential for a range of reasons, including health and wellbeing, tourism and improving the Scottish economy and sporting development and success.”
