A kayaker had to be airlifted to hospital after he got into difficulties on the River Tummel near Pitlochry.

The alarm was raised around 4.30pm on Sunday after the man got into trouble on a stretch of the river near Clunie Dam.

It is understood he came out of his craft and suffered a back injury.

Other kayakers came to his aid and he was helped out of the water to the riverbank where a local GP tended to him.

Although there were initial difficulties in pinpointing the location, the emergency services were on scene shortly after 5pm.

Firefighters from Pitlochry, Perth and Dunkeld assisted at the scene and the man was placed on a spinal board by paramedics.

Members of Tayside Police Search and Rescue unit were also on hand during the drama.

An RAF search and rescue helicopter was called to the scene from Glasgow and winched the injured man aboard at around 6.30pm. He was then flown to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for treatment.

The man was suffering from lower back pain but was said to have escaped serious injury.

A spokesman for Tayside Police praised the joint efforts of all involved including the fire service, police officers and ambulance crew calling the successful operation a ”good all round effort”.

The area of River Tummel involved is a popular one for watersports enthusiasts.
