The incident is understood to have happened at around 6.40pm in the Scott Street/South Street area on Monday.
Within a short time there was a large police presence in the area and officers assisted paramedics at the scene.
Witnesses to the aftermath spoke of seeing a man in his 30s or 40s being tended to as he lay on the pavement.
”He was then placed in a wheelchair and taken on board the ambulance. It looked to me like he had an injury to his chest,” said one passerby.
