The family of a missing pensioner are waiting for news after the body of a woman was found in Highland Perthshire.
It is expected that the body will be formally identified today, after it was discovered on Sunday.
Elizabeth Stevenson (77) has been missing from Pitlochry since February 21 when she went for her regular walk through the town. Search teams scoured the area extensively for her in the weeks after her disappearance, without success.
On Sunday, police in the town confirmed the discovery of a body at woods near Overton of Fonab, a farm on the opposite side of Loch Faskally from the town.
The remains were found by a walker on the popular route at 10.30am and police were called in to secure the scene.
A spokesman said: ”Although the circumstances do not appear to be suspicious, the death is unexplained and a thorough investigation is taking place.”
It is understood Mrs Stevenson’s family, based on the west coast, were informed. Her daughter, Fiona Kerr, had bravely taken part in a reconstruction event exactly a month after Mrs Stevenson, known as Bet, went missing.
She said at the time: ”We keep waking up every day and thinking this is the day that she will be found. Living so far away from Pitlochry has made things harder for us all. It’s tough to come up the road day after day knowing that she is not there in her wee house.”
The search was sparked when Mrs Stevenson failed to return to her Aldour Gardens home after her regular walk.
It saw dozens of police, dogs, divers and residents meticulously combing the countryside, believing her to have gone missing somewhere north of the town.
