Part of one of Perth’s main arterial routes was closed off on Sunday during a fire at a petrol station.
The roof of the Esso filling station caught fire shortly after at 4.30pm, resulting in Edinburgh Road being temporarily closed between Glenearn Road and the roundabout leading to Tesco.
Tayside Police cordoned the area off, and there were fire engines and six police vehicles in attendance.
The roof was destroyed, with staff at the station said to be shocked.
The Courier understands the fire may have been caused by a discarded cigarette in a nearby bin.
A police spokesman said: ”We closed Edinburgh Road to isolate the fire which had broken out on the roof of the petrol station. The fire wasn’t bad but we decided to isolate the area.”
A fire brigade spokeswoman said four engines and a command support unit helped put the fire out.
She said: ”We isolated the electrical supply to the petrol pumps and used an aerial ladder to put the roof fire out. Fire crew used two hose reels and two breathing apparatus. The fire had broken out in the roof space.”
A bystander, who wished to remain anonymous, said he felt the fire could have ”been a lot worse”.
”The petrol station were very lucky,” he said. ”You wouldn’t want to think what could have happened if petrol had caught alight. The road was closed and cordoned off, so the police were obviously treating it very seriously.”
