It may not have broken any records but a novel charity event has helped break the bank.

The Perth Kilt Run raised more than £10,000 for its two nominated charities – Perth and Kinross Association of Voluntary Services (PKAVS) and ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.

Donations and sponsorship from runners helped boost the fortunes of these organisations, which rely on the generosity of the public.

The record-breaking attempt also proved to be valuable in raising the awareness of the vital work carried out by the charities.

Staff from PKAVS and ABF The Soldiers’ Charity have praised the efforts of participants as well as those who gathered to watch the 8km run or volunteered at the event.

In particular, personal trainer Steve Bonthrone was singled out for raising money by hosting a series of workshops in the run-up to the run.

Perth and Kinross provost Liz Grant met representatives from both charities to congratulate them on their hard work.

”I’m delighted that the council’s jubilee celebrations – and especially the fantastic spectacle of the Kilt Run – raised funds for PKAVS and ABF The Soldiers’ Charity,” she said.

”I wish them the best of luck and will be proud to support them in their future fundraising endeavours.”

The Perth Kilt Run, which attracted more than 10,000 spectators failed to beat the record of 1089 participants, set by Canadian counterparts in Perth, Ontario, but it did provide a welcome boost for businesses as they enjoyed increased sales.

Interest has also been shown in making the jaunt an annual event and, having attracted support from Scottish celebrities, there is hope that next time round it will break the world record.

Among those taking part was Mark Beaumont, who said: ”The Kilt Run was a huge success and a really fun day out.

”It was a shame we just missed the world record, but over 1070 runners turned up on the day – we were so close.

”I know many people are keen to do the run again next year, which is great news – we’ll just have to beat the record then.

”I’m also delighted that people raised nearly £11,000 for PKAVS and ABF The Soldiers Charity on the Diamond Jubilee day, this all helps to make a huge difference.”
