‘A damn cheek’ family offered 30p after finding live maggot in orange

We are all advised to eat our five a day, but a Rattray family now have a good excuse for being put off fresh fruit for life.

Kimberley Grant (42), of Glendevon Court, brought home an orange she had bought at the Tesco store in Blairgowrie. But Mrs Grant and her husband Bruce (49) couldn’t believe their eyes when they cut the orange open and were confronted by a live red maggot.

Mr Grant said the family’s shock was soon replaced by anger when the store only offered 30p to buy a new orange.

”My wife bought it from Tesco on Friday and we cut it open when she got home,” he said. ”When we saw the maggot moving about we couldn’t believe it so I contacted Tesco through their Twitter account and they replied to say they would investigate it.

”Then we decided to take it down to their shop in Blairgowrie and my wife took it back and was offered 30p to buy another orange, which is not the type of customer service you expect. I thought it was a damn cheek.”

He continued: ”I’m really glad I didn’t bite into the orange as the maggot was still alive when we cut the fruit open. We’re still waiting to hear from Tesco regarding this.”

Tesco confirmed they are looking into the matter.

A spokesman said: ”We always aim to provide our customers with food of the highest standard and are investigating this matter with our suppliers. We will be in contact with the customer as soon as we have the results of this investigation.”
